Wood Stove History

Burning wood has help keep us warm since before recorded history.  Of course, it is still an important part of heating for a substantial portion of the world.  There are 3 main types of wood stoves available today.

  • Cast Iron
  • Steel
  • Soapstone

Benjamin Franklin invented the cast iron stove in the early 18th century.  They have been popular ever since.  The steel stove wasn’t popularized until the energy crises of the 1970’s due to the availability and price of plate steel and the relative ease to bend and weld it.  Soapstone has been used for cooking since the Ming Dynasty.  It is a popular choice for heating due to its ability to hold more heat per pound than any other natural material.  It will store heat and slowly release it even after the fire has died down.
