When it comes to maintaining the pool, there are several aspects that must be regularly checked and monitored in order to keep the pool water in excellent condition for swimming. These things are as follows:

  • Alkalinity
  • Water PH
  • Salt level
  • Stabilizer level

It is important to bear in mind that the maintenance process should not only focus on one of these aspects, but all of them to ensure having the perfect water chemistry that is ideal for swimming by humans.

Take note that water is an ideal environment for various types of microorganisms to thrive. If the ideal water chemistry is not attained, some bacteria may start to flourish and establish colonies. This will lead to various health risks to the swimmers. Thus, to avoid health issues among the pool swimmers, it is best to observe and impose the correct methods of maintaining salt water pools.

Recommended Maintenance for Salt Water Pools

Salt water pools require more extensive maintenance procedure compared to the standard pools. This is due to the additional salt content that you have to test and maintain, on top of the other tests. However, adding salt to the water is usually done only once, unless the pool loses a large amount of water or water is completely replaced.

Ideal PH Level of Salt Water Pools

For perfect swimming condition, salt water pools should neither be too acidic nor too alkaline. The recommended PH level is within the 7.4 to 7.8 range. This range is higher than the conventional pool. The PH level must be regularly checked at least once a week; two times in a week is better. Always remember that to maintain the PH level within the recommended range. Too low PH can cause eye irritation to the swimmers, aside from causing damage to metals present in pool heaters and other pool parts. High PH, on the other hand, can also cause bad effects like calcium scaling.

If the PH is too high, add dry acid or muriatic acid to lower the level. If the PH level is too low, simply add washing soda or borax to increase the level.

Alkalinity Level of Salt Water Pools

Alkalinity is another essential test to conduct when maintaining salt water pools. The ideal range of total alkalinity is 80 ppm to 120 ppm. Similar to the PH level, use soda or muriatic acid to keep the pool within the ideal level.

Salt Level of Salt Water Pools

The level of salt is one of the most important aspects of salt water pools. This keeps the pool safe for swimming because this acts like chlorine. Salt water is actually used to produce a form of chlorine called sodium hypochlorite. Nevertheless, the required level of salt that is perfect for swimming is 2,500 ppm to 4,000 ppm. This is way below the salt content of sea water, which averages at 40,000 ppm.

Stabilizer Level of Salt Water Pools 

Stabilizers like cyanuric acid are important in preserving the chlorine content of the pool, and in protecting it from the damaging effects of sunlight. Without the cyanuric acid, chlorine in the pool is destroyed causing the pool to have some issues like bacterial infestation. The level of cyanuric acid must be kept within the 20 to 60 ppm range.

There are still other maintenance procedures that need to be done on salt water pools; just make sure that the stabilizer level, the salt level, the alkalinity level, and the pH level of the water are regularly tested to keep the water fresh and perfect for swimming.
